DRC tells UN its troops are ready to act against rebels

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The UN says the Democratic Republic of Congo's president has assured Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that his army is ready to join UN troops in a military offensive against a rebel group that failed to surrender by a 2 January deadline.

The UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Ban called for "decisive action" against the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda in a phone conversation on Wednesday with DRC’s president Joseph Kabila.

The rebel group, known as the FDLR, was formed by extremist Rwandan Hutus who took part in the 1994 genocide and then fled across the border into DRC.

A senior UN official said the UN has prepared "a joint directive" authorising the military operation which it expects Kabila's government to sign "very soon". The official spoke on condition of anonymity because talks have been private.
